Rights

Rights and permissions

Canon & Compass is a public website and a public code repository, but those are not the same thing as a blanket permission to reuse everything in it.

This page clarifies what may be reused, what remains reserved, and how to ask permission when you want to quote, republish, adapt, or share material from this project.

Software and code

Unless otherwise noted, the software and site infrastructure in this repository are licensed under the MIT License. That applies to the code used to build and run the site, not automatically to the editorial content published through it.

The software terms are described in the repository's LICENSE file.

Path-level rights map

Canon & Compass uses a mixed-rights structure because the repository contains both software and original editorial work.

  • Reserved content: all MDX and frontmatter in src/content/**.
  • Reserved brand assets: public/brand.svg, public/canonandcompass.jpg, public/favicon.svg, and public/favicon_black.svg.
  • Mixed files: some source files contain both MIT-covered implementation code and reserved Canon & Compass prose such as headings, descriptions, and calls to action.
  • Separately noticed assets: some files may carry their own upstream or embedded notices, which continue to apply.

Editorial content and assets

Unless otherwise noted, the written content, MDX entries, original site copy, graphics, and brand assets on Canon & Compass are all rights reserved.

  • You may not republish full articles, mirror the site, create derivative versions for distribution, sell the content, or use it for model training without prior written permission, except where applicable law allows otherwise.
  • You may quote limited excerpts for review, commentary, teaching, or similar lawful uses when the quotation is properly attributed and not misleadingly edited.
  • You may not use the name or branding in a way that suggests affiliation, endorsement, or official partnership without permission.

Permissions

For republication, curriculum use, translation, adaptation, licensing, or any broader reuse request, email contact@canonandcompass.com.

Include the material you want to use, where you plan to use it, whether the use is commercial or noncommercial, and whether you want an excerpt, full text, or adaptation.

Reporting unauthorized copies

If Canon & Compass content is reposted without permission, preserve the URL, screenshots, and publication dates first. Then use the hosting platform's copyright or DMCA reporting process and point back to the original Canon & Compass publication where possible.

This page is a practical rights notice, not legal advice.
